How to Choose University Courses - I Chose Chemistry (experiences and advice)

By: Hang With Hannah

Hi guys so i just wanted to give you some tips and advice about applying for a chemistry degree im going to tell you frankly from my experience and what to expect and its up to you to decide whether you want to do it i think this is a very exciting time for a lot of you you might be about to fit your exams are trying to pick what you want to do and that face its very difficult to know what you want to do the rest of your life when youre 17 18 years old i know i did not i was doing english math chemistry and art and you can see my interests are quite widespread and my process of choosing was ok which one does everyone think is the hardest chemistry im gonna go with that one not to say that im not very interested in science because I really really am i really really enjoy it but actually my passion was dance but hey ho my parents are very academic focused there was no way I was gonna have a degree first and so I did it and Ill just paint you a rough picture of what kind of week when looks like so you know most people think all uni is so chill you get to wake up late this that and the other no no no not if you do chemistry youre meant to be elected at 9am everyday if you have lectures until about lunch then you have your lunch for an hour and then a lab lab lab lab lab and then in the evenings youre writing up your lab report so youve got actually very difficult time for anything else. First year does count a little bit less than the rest of the years but if Im going to be very honest with you theres a lot of new concepts constantly being thrown at you youve got to stay on the ball and if you dont get it youre going to kind of fall behind and in the next year youre going to really struggle. So first years were about kind of really trying to absorb everything thats going on even though it doesnt count for as much its really important to stay on top of it and learn as much as possible so picking Universities, I went for UCL cos I was, Ok Im from London and UCL is really cool and I love to check it out but if you want to actually have a real university experience and be immersed in something different I would really recommend going to a campus University and if you want to do societies and stuff if youre in chemistry you might not have as much time as you would like to do all these other things. I know I wanted to join the ton of societies. I was like yeah ping-pong yeah yeah chinese anything I really wanted to absorb and learn as much possible make loads of friends but doing chemistry is very difficult actually to find the time to do things like that. I had a weekend job and i want to wednesday evening and apart from that and my flatmate and my boyfriend at the time.

Those the only people have it for doing my degree so it wasnt as social as I would have hoped but yeah I think if you want to study chemistry UCL is a wonderful place and it was great but be prepared to work your butt off because it is very very demanding but if thats what you want to go into is a fantastic course and it will open all sorts of doors for you. If you have any questions to me about chemistry degree or Im choosing your course please comment and ill do my best to help you out please like subscribe share and ill see you soon with my next vlog. My next vlog is going to be about why chose to do career outside of chemistry yeah.

So stay tuned to hear what thats about! bye.
